December 22, 2004Here we are at the Alvarado Veterinary Clinic for a check-up 16 days ater the accident and, according to Dr. Beam, his wounds are healing very nicely. The pink area under his eye is new skin growing over the wound. His eye is fine, it's just dirty because he keeps trying to rubb off his bandages. His face is really itchy and he's really tired of having his wounds cleaned and bandages changed daily. There is lots of new blood supply to the damaged area and that's really good. Dr. Beam is very pleased at his progress. In spite of all the healing he's doing, everyone at the clinic remarked that he seems to have grown a couple of inches. Here is another picture after the vet tech had been washing his face for a while. The blood is good and means that there is ample blood supply to the wounded area. The stitches in the neck wound came out because the skin can't hold them but new flesh is forming and Dr. Beam says it will heal just fine as long as we keep out the infection.
Leo is getting large amounds of anitbiotics in his food in the morning and antibiotic cream is applied to the bandages after a thorough cleaning with betadyne solution. On the radio yesterday, one of the local talk show hosts was talking about how 75% of doctors believe in miracles because that is the only way some of their patients have survived and I truly believe we see a miracle here. Dr. Beam said he had never seen a horse with such severe injuries and here he is alive and forming new skin. His right bottom lip hangs a little and his nose lists to the left side. He'll have some pretty good scars (maybe I'll change his name to Scarface) but he's still here and he's doing fine. |

Our blog (a web log or sort of online diary) is maintained by chief stall mucker, poop picker-upper and all around slave to the animals,
Norma Epstein.
I write it all myself (no Pulitzer or accolades necessary) and I take all the pictures with a Minolta digital camera.
I try to take pictures daily and update the site by 5:00 p.m. Central Daylight Time, but it usually gets done sometime later.
