May 31 , 2007Blondie's swelling in her legs has completely gone away.. Here Arnie is 'de-sensitizing' her to plastic bags. Horses are very fearful of plastic bags because they make noise, are a different color, and move in the wind. Arnie is getting her used to the sound and the feel so she can see that there is nothing to fear. |

You can just read her mind - "What's the big deal" is probably what she's thinking (at least in this moment). We'll have to repeat this many times in all different settings so she can get 'de-sensitized'. A horse who has been exposed to all kinds of scary stuff (to a horse) will be a much better and safer horse to ride on the trail. You don't need a horse to get 'spooked' on the trail and take off running with you trying to hold on for your life. I've been on a trail ride where a horse saw a scary tree stump and almost bolted and another horse saw a flat rock on the trail and 'danced' all around it without taking his eyes off it. Sometimes when one horse 'spooks' it will get the others excited and spooky and you can have a real problem especially if any of the riders are inexperienced. |

We've had so much rain this month, the horses are up to their knees in mud. Every day this week, we've had monsoon rains and thunderstorms. Well, it's better than a drought - I think. |

A red-hedded woodpecker has decided to set up shop on our light pole in front of the barn. He's been working at the pole the whole week without any progress. |

Our blog (a web log or sort of online diary) is maintained by chief stall mucker, poop picker-upper and all around slave to the animals,
Norma Epstein.
I write it all myself (no Pulitzer or accolades necessary) and I take all the pictures with a Minolta digital camera.
I take pictures and post to the blog whenever I find something interesting or have something interesting to say (and even sometimes when I don't).
