May 26, 2004I caught another snake! That makes 4 in the last 24 hours! Even though I thought I caught them all and didn't see any at bed check last night, something still got all the 8 eggs this banty chicken was incubating. This picture was taken at noon and she had finally quit sitting on the empty nest. From my observations, chickens mourn lost babies and eggs. I've seen hens look and call for babies lost to snakes or hawks for hours. This little Porcelain chicken is definitely grieving her loss. I guess I'll have to go snake hunting again tonight (they are most active after dark and it is only rare that they are out hunting in daylight - chicks are most vulnerable at night because they won't eat, drink or move once the sun has gone down and they have roosted)

Katy has the whole pasture but, of course, the grass tastes better right next to the yard where the dogs stay. She really enjoys teasing the dogs and does so at every opportunity. She's teaching Leo to do the same. |

Our blog (a web log or sort of online diary) is maintained by chief stall mucker, poop picker-upper and all around slave to the animals,
Norma Epstein.
I write it all myself (no Pulitzer or accolades necessary) and I take all the pictures with a Minolta digital camera.
I try to take pictures daily and update the site by 5:00 p.m. Central Daylight Time, but it usually gets done sometime later.
